Get to Know Us

Welcome to AfriLife! We are committed to transforming beekeeping into a sustainable force for good, recognizing the crucial role of bees as essential pollinators and champions of environmental sustainability and economic empowerment. Our mission focuses on enhancing bee capabilities to bolster vital pollination, drive environmental protection, and create profitable opportunities for farmers, ultimately promoting food security.

AfriLife embodies Tanzania’s values of nature conservation and community empowerment. We acknowledge the country’s rich forest resources and the importance of sustainable practices in beekeeping. By engaging in innovative practices and fostering community involvement, AfriLife aims to create a positive impact on livelihoods while nurturing the environment. We invite you to join our movement towards a sustainable future through.

Atanas Mluki is the co-founder and CEO of AfriLife Products Limited, having been raised in  a beekeeping family in Kabila village, Tabora, Tanzania. His grandfather, a skilled beekeeper,  faced financial struggles despite owning numerous traditional beehives. After his  grandfather’s passing when Atanas was 23, he worked as a carpenter until he joined an  American company selling nutritional products, where he acquired valuable sales and  marketing skills.

Discovering that American honey was priced significantly higher than his grandfather’s  honey inspired Atanas to return to his roots. He realized that their honey had the potential  to compete globally with effective branding. This realization led him to establish AfriLife,  with the aim of elevating Tanzanian honey in both local and international markets while  empowering other beekeepers to overcome poverty.

Our network of beekeepers engages in extensive beekeeping within the ancestral Kigosi  Forest Reserve, which spans an area of 8,265 km². The beehives are suspended from trees  in the forest, located approximately 30 to 120 km from local villages, ensuring that our  honey is organic by default. The Kigosi Forest is surrounded by Miombo Woodlands, which  are vital to the livelihoods of smallholder beekeepers in the area.

Beekeepers hang their hives from the branches of flowering Miombo trees within the Kigosi  Forest Reserve. The honey produced from these woodlands meets the basic needs of these  beekeepers, including food, shelter, health care, and spiritual well-being.

Why Choose AfriLife Honey?

Here are a few reasons to consider when choosing where to buy your Honey!”

Assured Quality

To further enhance our quality measures, Afrilife adheres to the Tanzania Bureau Standards
(TBS) and is actively pursuing HACCP and Organic certification. Honey samples from the
June-July season of 2022 have been tested by Intertek Food Services GmbH in Germany.
These tests provide indicative analysis, assuring prospective buyers of Afrilife’s commitment
to delivering high-quality, natural honey. You can access the results separately by clicking
here to make your request.

Traceable origins

The honey sample underwent inductive analysis conducted by Intertek Food Service GmbH in Germany. Their findings concluded that the sample can be classified as “Blossom Honey.” Based on the examined pollen spectrum, there are no objections to labeling the honey’s regional origin as “Tanzania.” Consequently, the designation “Tanzania” as the regional origin is deemed permissible under Council Directive 2001/110/EC dated December 20, 2001, in conjunction with relevant literature.

Unpasteurised Perfection

Afrilife’s honey is unpasteurized, preserving its natural enzymes, antioxidants, and health benefits. This method ensures that the unique flavors from the two honey flow seasons— light amber from Julbernardia globiflora during the rainy season and darker honey from Brachystegia speciformis during the dry season—remain intact. The result is a product that not only tastes exceptional but also offers maximum nutritional value.

Varied Flavours

AfriLife offers a convenient solution for enjoying honey with spices by providing natural honey infused with high-quality spices. This product has been developed through extensive trial and error to ensure that each jar features a perfect blend of honey and spices, selected for their quality to match the excellence of the honey. The infusion process allows consumers to enjoy the health benefits of both ingredients in a single spoonful, eliminating the need for separate mixing and enhancing the overall flavor experience.

Supporting Local Economy

Choosing Afrilife honey means actively supporting the local economy. By partnering with local beekeepers and farmers in Tanzania, Afrilife promotes fair trade practices and sustainable livelihoods. This not only helps empower rural communities but also strengthens the agricultural sector, ensuring that local traditions and knowledge are preserved.

Personal Connection

Afrilife honey fosters a personal connection to nature and its cycles. Each jar represents a journey through the Kigosi Forest Reserve, reflecting the changing seasons and their impact on honey production. By indulging in Afrilife’s honey, consumers are not just enjoying a sweet treat; they are participating in a celebration of nature’s bounty and contributing to a healthier lifestyle.

FAQs

  • Is Your Honey Organic?

Our honey is naturally organic, sourced from the pristine Kigosi Forest Reserve. The beehives are strategically located 30 to 120 kilometers within the forest, ensuring they remain far from human activities and potential contaminants. We are currently pursuing formal organic certification for our processes and producers, which will further validate our commitment to providing you with healthier honey.

  • Why Infuse Spices into Honey?

At our company, we have dedicated the past nine years to exploring the remarkable benefits of spices in healing. Our studies have uncovered an extraordinary synergy when natural honey and spices are combined in precise proportions. This unique blend unlocks profound healing potential.

  • Are the Spices Infused in Your Honey Natural?

Yes, all spices infused in our honey are natural. They are carefully extracted from various spices to maintain their nutrients when blended with honey, creating a powerful superfood for your health.

  • What is Honey Granulation and How Do I Fix It?

Honey granulation, or crystallization, is a natural process where honey becomes solid due to the formation of sugar crystals. To fix it, simply place the jar in warm water (not boiling), loosen the lid, and gently heat until the honey returns to its liquid state.

  • How Is Your Honey Processed?

We receive raw honeycombs from over 300 beekeepers around Kigosi Forest Reserve. The honey is manually strained using gravity and filtered by hand to remove impurities while preserving vital pollen for health benefits.

  • How Should I Store My Honey?

To preserve its quality, store your honey at room temperature in a sealed container. Avoid direct sunlight or extreme temperatures as they can cause loss of vital nutrients.

  • How Long Does Honey Last?

Properly stored honey can last for years without losing its quality.
